In the evening the RMP  again hosted a public fundraiser / social event at the Drill Hall from 6.30pm, a “Cup day Classical Cabaret”. The inaugural event was held in 2014 as an important fundraising event for the RMP, following the loss of all funding from the City of Melbourne in the 2014 round of triennial arts funding. It quickly sold out,  was held again last year and was also a great success this year.

Friends, families, audience, fellow musicians, and members of the wider community had the chance to show their support by joining members of the RMP Choir and Orchestra for a relaxed, informal social gathering and musical celebration.

Tickets included fine wines and gourmet cheeses, fruit platters and delicious nibbles, tea coffee, pastries and light refreshments as well as wonderful entertainment provided by some of Australia’s finest opera, instrumental and chamber musicians.

Maestro Andrew Wailes again assembled an extraordinary line up of talent for the 2016 event, who thrilled and entertained as they performed throughout the evening. Entertainment this year included outstanding award-winning Australian virtuoso pianist Stefan Cassomenos, Principal singer with Opera Australia and Royal Opera Covent Garden Suzy Shakespeare (soprano), outstanding young jazz pianist Adam Cook, young New Zealand born tenor Zachary McCulloch, emerging opera singer Shakira Dugan (mezzo soprano), accomplished accompanist Jodie Lockyer (piano) and the exciting Naomi Summers (soprano).

Artists who have previously appeared at this event have also included outstanding award-winning Australian pianists Stefan Tristan Lee and Amir Farid,  Monica Curro (Assistant Principal 2nd Violin, MSO), Philip Arkinstall Associate Principal Clarinet, MSO), distinguished soprano Merlyn Quaife AO, leading contralto Liane Keegan, contemporary chamber music ensemble PLEXUS, bass baritone Daniel Carison (2014 RMP Aria Winner), Michelle Wood (cello, MSO), rising young tenor Douglas Kelly, Flamenco pianist Zen Zeng and more!!!

There was another huge silent auction with all proceeds going to the fighting fund to help keep the RMP making music in Melbourne for another 165 years.

Next year bring your friends, and get behind the RMP and help support one of Melbourne’s Musical Icons!

If you wish to donate anything for the 2017 Silent Auction (service vouchers or experiences, artwork, jewellery, non perishable foods, glassware, silverware, wines and spirits, gourmet items, toys, CDs and DVS, electrical goods etc, please email secretary@rmp.org.au or all 0433 661 971. Collection can be arranged for large items or they can be delivered to the Drill Hall prior to the event.
