In September 2024, Broadwest Productions presented five concert performances at Melbourne’s Capital Theatre with The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.
A professionally produced nine-camera, two-hour concert film version of the final performance will now offer audiences the chance to revisit this exciting new musical by Samuel Kristy and experience the spectacular performances and sonic splendour of this powerful new theatre piece on the big screen, of Victor Hugo’s classic romantic story of love, hope and resilience.
Broadwest Productions proudly presents the filmed version of the world premiere of a new musical in concert:
‘Quasimodo -The Musical’ – The untold story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame by Samuel Kristy. Featuring lush orchestrations by Hamish Ander and under the Musical Direction of Andrew Wailes, this show features memorable characters, and a series powerful musical numbers dealing with the universal human issues of Love, Romance, Lust, Betrayal, and Murder. . . a stellar cast of some of Australia’s leading musical theatre soloists was assembled to bring this wonderful new score to life, accompanied by the acclaimed Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.
Set in Paris 1482 in the Gothic marvel of Notre Dame Cathedral, “Quasimodo -The Musical” catapults us into a thrilling tale of unrequited love and a tangled web of mystery, adventure, and intrigue which envelopes the characters – the hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo, the Gypsy girl Esmeralda, Captain Phoebus, and the Evil Archdeacon Frollo. Destiny throws them together into a seething cauldron of conflicting desires.
The audience is taken on an exciting emotional roller coaster ride – from tragedy to farce and comedy. The ‘Brethren of Beggars, Thieves and Gypsies’ bring a sparkling ray of light – with their boisterous, rollicking songs and music which will get toes tapping.

“…featuring a significant score and some wonderful songs, the musical is substantial, overwhelmingly nearly, in both its sound and range… the score is wonderfully executed by the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic. Under the skilful command of conductor and MD Andrew Wailes, both the orchestra and choir expertly manoeuvred the often-complex score, filling the enormous Capitol Theatre with a full, rich sound.

The historic art deco Capitol Theatre on Swanston Street in the central business district of Melbourne, opened in 1924 and was designed by American husband and wife architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. It is the oldest of Melbourne’s surviving large picture palaces, and is known for its extravagant décor and abstract motifs, including an intricate geometric ceiling containing thousands of coloured lights, designed to evoke the walls of a crystalline cave. Following major refurbishments, The Capitol Theatre has since re-opened, and is once again a spectacular venue for festival screenings, theatrical performances, and other events. In 2024 the Capitol celebrated its 100th anniversary, and the RMP was thrilled to perform the largest production yet to be staged in the newly restored venue.
